Cowhides make beautiful rugs for your home, offering a wonderfully soft underfoot feel that instantly elevates your living space with an unmistakable aura of comfort and coziness. Generally, they are very easy to care for, ensuring lasting beauty. To help your cowhide maintain its pristine condition and extend its lifespan, we recommend placing it in a low-traffic area, though their durability makes them suitable for various spots.
Should you notice any curling on the edges, a simple solution is to lightly mist the affected edge with water and place something heavy on it overnight to flatten it out. For more persistent or really curled spots, you can carefully trim them away with an X-Acto knife. This curling can sometimes be caused by dry house climates or high-traffic areas. Keep in mind that cowhides will naturally have a few unique characteristics; small, discreet repairs may have been completed by the tannery during the long and complex tanning process due to the sheer size of these hides. This in no way detracts from the inherent character and beauty of the hide.
Pets absolutely adore sleeping on cowhides too! They're fantastic for placing on cold floors, providing a warm and inviting spot for your furry friends and helping maintain overall comfort in your home, especially if you have a large cowhide rug or even an extra large cowhide that can accommodate multiple pets.
Our cowhides, including popular choices like an Angus Oliver large cowhide rug, are ethically sourced from non-rainforest regions in Brazil and Columbia. Each cowhide undergoes a thorough inspection for quality upon arrival and is priced accordingly, ensuring you receive a premium product.
It's important to know that all of our cowhides are byproducts of the meat industry. If they weren't expertly tanned into stunning rugs, they would most likely be discarded as waste. Our tannery has informed us that only about 6% of cows slaughtered for meat have their hides tanned for rugs, and of that, only a small percentage (around 3%) of these cowhides feature colors and patterns other than the more common black and brown variations, making each unique piece a special find.
