Cowhides make truly beautiful and distinctive rugs for your home, offering a unique blend of rustic charm and sophisticated elegance. They feel incredibly soft underfoot, providing an unmistakable aura of comfort and coziness that elevates any living space. Generally, they are very easy to care for, making them a practical yet luxurious addition to your decor. To help your cowhide last and maintain its pristine condition, it's a good idea to place it in a low-traffic area where it won't experience excessive wear.
If you notice any curling on the edges, a simple trick is to lightly mist the affected edge with water and then place something heavy on it overnight to flatten it out. For really stubborn or pronounced curled spots, you can carefully trim them away with an exacto knife to restore a smooth edge. Keep in mind that dry house climates or high-traffic areas in the home can sometimes contribute to curling. While each cowhide is unique and naturally beautiful, they will normally have a few minor natural defects. Occasionally, small, discreet repairs may have been completed by the tannery during the long and complex tanning process—a testament to the craft involved in preparing these large cowhides. These minor touches don't detract from the authentic character of the hide; in fact, they often enhance its natural story.
Pets absolutely adore cowhides too! Their natural insulation makes them a wonderful choice for placing on cold floors, helping to maintain warmth and comfort for your furry friends (and your feet!) throughout the home. Consider a large cowhide rug or even an extra large cowhide to give them plenty of space to sprawl out and relax.
Our stunning cowhides, like those offered by Angus Oliver, are carefully sourced from non-rainforest regions in Brazil and Colombia, ensuring ethical and sustainable practices. Each cowhide undergoes a thorough inspection for quality upon arrival and is priced accordingly, guaranteeing you a beautiful and durable product.
It’s important to know that all of our cowhides are valuable byproducts of the meat industry. If these hides weren't carefully tanned into beautiful rugs, they would most likely be discarded as waste. Our tannery shares that only about 6 percent of cows slaughtered for meat have their hides processed for rugs, and of that small percentage, only about 3% feature the unique colors and patterns beyond the common black and brown. This means that each colored or patterned large cowhide rug is truly special and somewhat rare.
